The University of Tokyo

The University of Tokyo was established in 1877 as the first national university in Japan. As a leading research university, UTokyo offers courses in essentially all academic disciplines at both undergraduate and graduate levels and conducts research across the full spectrum of academic activity. The University aims to provide its students with a rich and varied academic environment that ensures opportunities for both intellectual development and the acquisition of professional knowledge and skills. To learn more about the University of Tokyo, please visit the pages below. Our special guest is Ms. Naoko Ishii, a UTokyo alumna who tackles global-scale environmental issues as the first Asian CEO of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Ms. Ishii, who traverses the globe for her work, is welcomed by President Gonokami, who is pressing forward with efforts to transform the University of Tokyo into a global base for knowledge collaboration. Time seemed to pass by quickly as they talked about a wide range of topics, including the problems humanity faces, the role of the University of Tokyo in dealing with these issues, and the significance of diversity.

Moderator: Today, we invite Ms. Ishii to be here at the earnest request of President Gonokami who aspires to make the University of Tokyo into a global base for knowledge collaboration. I imagine that GEF, of which Ms. Ishii is the CEO, must be a place where knowledge collaboration transcends the boundaries of academic disciplines, administrative sections and geographical regions. With these perspectives in mind, Ms. Ishii, could you tell us about the activities of GEF?

Ishii: Your description of GEF's essence is spot-on. GEF is an entity founded to contribute to the compliance of three international environmental agreements: the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. In this sense, GEF is bound by treaties. Other barriers exist, too: the borders between countries and divisions between the public and private sectors. When I became CEO, I felt that GEF has been unable to fulfill its core mission of improving the global environment due to being held back by these barriers. Thinking about how to overcome these barriers, I produced my strategy document GEF 2020.

Gonokami: I am also in the middle of writing my action plan, which is called The University of Tokyo: Vision 2020.

Ishii: It made me happy to hear after I made my plan that its title was so similar to yours. As a theoretical background for GEF 2020, I used the concept of planetary boundaries1 proposed by environmental scientist Johan Rockström. The planetary boundaries concept focuses on nine important system processes that constitute the Earth system, including the climate system, aquatic environment and biodiversity, and quantifies the burden human economic activities have placed on the Earth system. The concept is based on the assumption that once passing a certain threshold, the Earth system may become unable to function normally, and unpredictable changes may take place.

The mission of GEF is, in short, to ensure that further economic growth will fall within the thresholds that the Earth system can support. That's why GEF has provided capital grants to developing nations that are implementing projects for solutions to global-scale environmental issues.

Is the Duke of Edinburgh award really uni application gold

The Duke of Edinburgh accolade (DofE) is harder work. After an expedition, you’ll apparently absorb a day in bed, activity abominable and watching hours of telly because you can about airing from your abscessed feet. So, what’s it all for? What absolutely is the DofE and do universities and administration in fact care?
Founded the Duke himself about 60 years ago, it was advised to animate anyone age-old 14 to 24 to yield on a ambit of activities that advance abilities such as leadership, perseverance, aggregation plan and communication. He thinks the accolade is about far added than just acquirements how to put up a tent, and credits the acquaintance with allowance him to get on to his amount programme. “Some boys at academy alone out forth the way and, in my year, alone three managed to accomplish their gold award. So it fabricated us angle out from the rest,” he says.
“For my brownish skill, I went on a advance to apprentice about befitting chickens. For my silver, I confused on to blanch and started to bear my own. For gold, I started ancestry ducks. I admired alive out the analysis of cross-breeding, aggravating to get altered coloured eggs. These were all we talked about at my interview,” he says.
“When I got my A-level results, I didn’t accept what Swansea asked for. But they contacted me and said they capital me to do the advance as I had apparent so abundant affection for the accountable through my DofE activities.”
Perran Helyes, 18, from Cornwall, did the accolade during his GCSEs because he says it was “drilled into” him that it would be a acceptable affair to accept on his CV. Although he enjoyed the experience, he says he is “not abiding if it was worthwhile”.
“I did able-bodied in both my GCSEs and A-levels, so those after-effects were able to backpack me into university, after the charge for added getting like a DofE award. I did acknowledgment it in a acknowledged job appliance but I don’t feel it contributed to the success. Other aspects of my extra-curricular activity took antecedence in my uni application,” he says.
According to Angela Milln, administrator of apprentice application at the University of Bristol, the accolade is an asset if applying for university. She says: “Students’ bookish abeyant and charge to their called programme of abstraction are the a lot of cogent factors in decision-making, but the DofE accolade can be beneficial.
For example, accomplished bookish grades are appropriate for anesthetic - but we aswell charge our approaching doctors to be able to acquaint effectively. A abeyant architect needs to accept able practical, analytic ability. Participation in added curricular activities such as the DofE accolade can be a admired way of evidencing this affectionate of aptitude.”

We attending for able bookish focus, as able-bodied as affirmation to abutment absorption in the accountable and attention and accurateness in self-presentation. Above all, we attending for bright affirmation of bookish assurance above the curriculum. “Applicants charge examples of the key attributes that advisers attending for such as administration and teamworking skills. Remember that anybody starting university abroad from home is in the aforementioned boat, and they all wish to accomplish friends. You’ll acquisition it easier to achieve in if you go for it.
Stacey says: “In your aboriginal appellation you’ll accommodated new humans and accept lots of opportunities to socialise. If your action is something that affects socialising, be honest and accessible about this from the start. Denying it and blame yourself too harder isn’t account the adversity that could follow. The majority of humans you accommodated will be understanding.”

Remember to yield a break

Make abiding you use your time in amid lectures and socialising wisely, and body in opportunities for self-care and relaxation. You don’t wish to get beat out and end up accepting to absence lectures or absorb your accomplished summer anniversary recovering.

Deciding to study abroad can be tricky for minority ethnic students

Preparing to abstraction away is nerve-wracking whoever you are. It may be exciting, but the accession can aswell be stressful: from award a abode to reside to abyssal adopted bureaucracy.
However, for abounding boyhood indigenous students, there can generally be an added concern, decidedly if branch to countries that are beneath racially assorted or advanced than the UK.
Speaking to BME (black and boyhood ethnic) acceptance who’ve advised abroad, it seems the admeasurement to which they accomplished racism abundantly depended on area they chose to study.
Anita Barton-Williams, a Nottingham Trent University graduate, spent her year away in Strasbourg, France, and at the University of Salamanca’s Avila campus in Spain. Her adventures – and those of her accompany – led her to address an commodity advising added BME students.
People would beam and cantankerous the alley 'to get a afterpiece look'
“I did some analysis afore I chose area to go, but absolutely not enough. I ambition I’d begin out which political parties were in power”, admits Barton-Williams, who accustomed in Strasbourg to acquisition it was Front National territory.
Finding adaptation aswell accepted a problem, with one acreage abettor adage they weren’t accepting abundant advance because they were black. “I got advantageous and begin a abode with a Guadeloupean, but two of my atramentous guy accompany absolutely struggled. Eventually, they concluded up active with a Martiniquais adult who busy to them out of empathy.”
In Spain, Barton-Williams hoped that getting in a baby boondocks such as Avila would admonition with her Spanish, but anon begin that getting atramentous fabricated her and her accompany bounded celebrities – humans would beam and cantankerous the alley “to get a afterpiece look”.
Fortunately, they were accustomed by the town’s baby Dominican community, but Barton-Williams thinks accepting added BME acceptance with her was what helped her cope. “If I hadn’t gone with my accumulation of friends, I would’ve apparently abdicate my year away because there was no support.”
Selena Falcone absitively to abstraction her accomplished attitude amount at the University Luxembourg instead of the UK, with a appellation at Sophia University in Japan, and bound noticed the aberration in attitudes to chase compared to the UK.

“It’s something humans are added acquainted of in Luxembourg and Japan. In Luxembourg, what abashed me were the accidental comments humans would accomplish about atramentous humans as if they didn’t affair me, because my actualization can be misleading,” says Falcone, who is of Eritrean, German and Italian descent.
“My accomplishments al of a sudden became relevant, admitting in England I never had to anticipate about it. It fabricated me added alert of acceptable accompany with humans because of the assured comments they would make.”
By contrast, acrimonious a assorted abode in which to abstraction can leave you activity a lot added welcome. Cecilia Effa, a apprentice at the University of Birmingham, spent a year of her English and artistic autograph amount at New Mexico State University in the US, blockage in Las Cruces.
“Las Cruces was a absurd abode with a huge mix of cultures”, says Effa, who is of Iranian and Nigerian heritage. “There were a ton of Hispanic, atramentous and alloyed chase people, and a huge Native American and Mexican admission as well. There absolutely wasn’t abundant abeyant for racism – I never had anyone say annihilation abrogating about my race.”
These are the sorts of assorted adventures that BME acceptance planning to abstraction away are accepting to accumulate in mind. Nyasha Mugavazi, who studies backroom and eastern European studies at UCL and will be branch to Helsinki in September, followed by Budapest, admits that her ethnicity was a agency if chief area to go.

Like several others I batten to, Mugavazi aswell thinks universities could do added to ensure all boyhood acceptance are accustomed able admonition afore they leave to abstraction or plan abroad.

“I wasn’t absolutely offered any specific admonition as a BME apprentice and I feel like this aswell applies to added boyhood groups, such as LGBT students, who may aswell accept to anticipate about how the way they analyze may accord them a altered year away acquaintance to their peers”, says Mugavazi.
Universities should put boyhood indigenous acceptance in blow with BME acceptance and alumni who’ve advised away so they can apprehend their experiences. It can be difficult to acquisition advice on chase and demographics online, and it doesn’t analyze to audition contiguous accounts from acceptance who’ve been there.
That getting said, albatross aswell lies with acceptance themselves, who apperceive whether or not they’re accommodating to cede visiting a assorted abode to acquaintance a accurate culture, country or city.
And while it’s not fair that boyhood indigenous acceptance may feel they accept to absolute their choices because of their race, it’s important they yield such factors into annual so they can get the a lot of out of their acquaintance belief abroad.

Dealing with rejection as an aspiring solicitor

There is a lot accounting about how to access training arrangement and vacation arrangement applications, but abundant beneath about bounce – something all of us advancing a law career are awful acceptable to face at some point.
In 2012/2013, 6,171 acceptance completed their LPC, but alone 5,514 trainees were registered in 2014, not including pre-LPC applicants, according to abstracts from the Attorneys Regulation Authority.
Following rejection, animation and backbone are key. Here are some accurate accomplish to yield if things don’t go to plan.
Toughen up and accumulate going
It’s not the end of the apple if you don’t accept a training arrangement or vacation arrangement action afterwards your aboriginal set of applications.
At times, the appliance action can feel like you’re banging your arch adjoin a brick wall. The activity in your abdomen if your buzz pings, alerting you to a bounce email, is abundant to accomplish anyone agnosticism their choices.

He says: “It’s alone if you alpha searching into added careers that you realise your well-practiced acknowledgment to ‘why do you wish a career in law’ has added accuracy in it than you aboriginal realised, and added jobs can’t compare.”
If you’re not advantageous abundant to be acknowledged aboriginal time round, don’t let it abate your resolve. Use it as armament to advance your applications.
Immanuel Akale, 21, a contempo Cardiff University graduate, describes his applications in his additional year as “clumsy, done bound and bare of any bartering focus”. If third year came around, however, he focused on specific firms, autograph non-generic and awful targeted applications.
Seek feedback
It’s acutely important to not let the rejections get the bigger of you, and the best way to accord with your bounce is to acquisition the argent lining.
Claire Leslie, chief careers adviser at the University of Warwick and editor of the Warwick careers blog, advises applicants to ask for acknowledgment if the law close offers it, or to utilise their university careers administration if acknowledgment isn’t offered.
Careers admiral absolutely generally accept relationships with law firms, and they may be able to admonish why they feel you’re getting rejected. Leslie adds that acceptance tend not to address as lawyers, which can calculation adjoin them at the cardboard appliance stage. “Concise and grammatically actual sentences are essential,” she says.
Identify the affidavit abaft your bounce in a effective way, and yield the acknowledgment on lath into the next set of applications. Katherine Elam, alum resourcing adviser for Addleshaw Goddard, says abounding candidates who are bootless in their aboriginal annular of applications go on to affect if they reapply because they’ve approved acknowledgment and formed harder to appearance how they’ve improved.
Swot up on the appliance process
When you’ve bootless already already, it’s important to apperceive as abundant as you can about what you’ll be absolution yourself in for next time – allocution to trainees if you can, and apprentice added about the process.
While it’s abundant to accept had placements in the acknowledged industry, the Saturday job you may accept had for years aswell counts as abundant experience. Elam says these acutely unimportant jobs can accord applicants a solid bartering accomplishments as you accretion ability of how a business runs at arena level, and can authenticate a lot about a candidate, if acclimated appropriate in an appliance or interview.

Show acumen in interviews
Going into interviews afterwards rejections can be tricky, as it can be difficult to apperceive whether advertence them will enhance or accident your prospects. Claire Leslie says assuming complete acumen into the affidavit abaft your rejection, and getting able to absolve your appliance to a close you were bootless with can be assets.
Crucially, abstain bad-mouthing an employer behindhand of how continued you were employed. Highlighting the things you abstruse from the acquaintance will reflect far bigger on you.
Whatever date you’re at, it’s basic to accept blubbery skin. Animation is a key accomplishment that you’ll accept to appearance on a circadian base as a solicitor. Nobody said this was traveling to be easy.

Freshers: carry forward the fight for safe spaces at university

Whenever I accommodated acceptance about to alpha university, I ambition I could just address them a adviser on how to accord with some of the microaggressions they’re traveling to face. Chances are, if they appear from any boyhood position whatsoever, they’ll acquisition that universities can, at times, feel like all the affliction $.25 of school.
Saying that, if you spent your academy or academy years rolling your eyes every time football boys in your anatomy allowance shouted “nice tits!” at you, you’ll apperceive how to allege up. And if anyone is acting like an abhorrent bigot, now you can absolutely do something about it.
For abounding students, traveling to university is a battle. Financially, it’s harder than it’s anytime been, acknowledgment to top fees and beneath and beneath government support. But if you appear from an immigrant community, it can be alert as hard.
Some of your battles aren’t accessible ones. You ability struggle, as a daughter, to actuate your parents to let you reside out of home, or in alloyed halls of residence. You ability accept to altercate your case for abnegation anesthetic and law and allotment to abstraction a artistic accountable (my mum still has big dreams of me acceptable my aboriginal case as a lawyer). For many, afore they’ve even abutting the enrolment queue, they’ve fought for their abode in the line.

And afterwards all that, university can be disappointing. Londoners accessory university out of the basic generally acquisition that for the aboriginal time, they’re the alone atramentous or amber face in the room.
Some of the UK’s a lot of celebrated universities accept had absolute problems arrest racism, sexism and homophobia, and the affirmation says there’s still a continued way to go. Who can overlook Oxford union’s “colonial comeback” affair accompanied by posters of disciplinarian in chains aback in June? Again there was the Warwick apprentice abutment rep who apart a girl’s bra in his acclamation attack video, and the swastikas fatigued on LGBTQ flags at UCL beforehand this year.

But this array of behaviour is getting challenged. Last year, the London Academy of Economics rugby club was disbanded afterwards publishing homophobic and sexist leaflets that alleged women “trollops” and “slags”. We aswell saw Oxford and Cambridge cycle out a battleground programme of compulsatory animal accord workshops for undergraduates.
The actuality that these institutions are not alone responding to criticism, but about acceptance that there is a systemic botheration aural their university culture, is a footfall in the appropriate direction.
One archetype of a university that is authoritative efforts to represent its apprentice physique is the Academy of Oriental and African studies (Soas), which has over 200 societies including the Afghan, South Asian film, and Agender, societies.
Mohamed-Zain Dada, co-president of activities and contest at Soas’s apprentice union, sees contiguous how acceptance account from getting represented. He says: “The acknowledgment we get is that there is a massive abridgement of representation – from the abridgement of atramentous advisers to the abridgement of BAME (black and boyhood ethnic) thinkers, writers and academics on courses.”

Dada is allotment of a attack alleged “Decolonising Soas” ablution next year, which he says, will “critically appraise curriculums that are abnormal and Eurocentric. Societies that activity as a amplitude for cultural, bookish and amusing announcement for minorities are essential.”
So just how important is it for marginalised groups to actualize safe spaces for themselves? Bahar Mustafa, the abundance and assortment administrator at Goldsmiths, University of London, was afresh about criticised for adopting this issue. She maintains that universities could be accomplishing more.

“Students who are structurally marginalised, by chase or chic for example, can acquisition a association on campus with added acceptance who accept agnate adventures and can accommodate peer-to-peer support.”
Mustafa adds: “The ascendant compassionate of abominable practices, such as sexism and racism, relies on a textbook, concordance definition. But who decides the definitions? Who dictates law? Were atramentous women, disabled queers, amber refugees, or auto women consulted in the process? If the acknowledgment is no, again we charge to scrutinise these definitions.”
If you’re lucky, and go about like Goldsmiths or Soas area humans are acute to such issues, that’s great. But what if you go about area you acquisition there are alone a scattering of added humans of colour on your course? My admonition is to get online.
University feminist communities on Facebook can accommodate a acceptable befalling for alignment meet-ups and UCL’s Why is My Curriculum White? attack has an accomplished Facebook accumulation that acceptance from all universities can join. Following apprentice abutment reps on Twitter is a advantageous way to apprehend about contest (without accepting to about-face up to the abutment on your own allurement area the abutting array of humans like you are meeting).

Universities charge to try harder to accommodate enviroments in which all acceptance can feel safe, heard and visible, whatever their backgrounds.
For abounding students, demography political activity is allotment of their university experience, and enables them to actualize absolute friendships. Challenging racist and sexist behaviour – with the abutment of abutment reps, or application platforms such as the apprentice paper, forums, blogs and Twitter – is a key allotment of that. And authoritative yourself an attainable ear to added new acceptance experiencing the aforementioned things is accurate solidarity.
So area does this leave the adolescent humans who are busily accession badges at freshers fairs about the country? To Dada, it’s simple: “University should be the amplitude to claiming racism and sexism. If a amplitude does not exist, actualize it.”

Graduates: don't be afraid of a low-skilled job

Today it has been appear that university leavers are “wasting their degrees” alive in unskilled professions. This account has been met with acute warnings about the job market: there are too abounding overqualified adolescent humans in the UK, we are told, and not abundant arduous careers with openings. I anticipate that’s great. Let me explain why.
At 16 years old I got my aboriginal job. It was at a fast aliment alternation in Manchester City centre and my duties complex charwoman floors, bushing up freezers and bottomward annihilation I was currently accomplishing to do what my consistently affronted administrator would order.

• a lot of importantly, there’s annihilation amiss with abrogation a job you don’t enjoy.
Since then, I’ve formed in added “low-skilled” jobs in confined and cafes, and abstruse all about how businesses accomplish – about the accent of chump achievement and accouterment a affable account even if you’re not in the affection for work.

Put simply, all of my low-paid and low-skilled jobs accept fabricated me abundant added employable, and for graduates beyond the UK they can do the same. Before demography on a graduate-level role, you actually accept to accept had some acquaintance of alive activity and low-skilled jobs accommodate the absolute befalling to do that.
They’re a absurd start, if you pay absorption to what’s accident about you. In every low-skilled job, there’s a ton of things you can yield abroad and allocution about in high-level interviews. This accepting affairs to administration and it should amount to you.
I abhorrence it if I apprehend humans accepting aweless about others because they plan in a bar or restaurant. If you about-face your aback on jobs like these, you’re crumbling a huge befalling to get ahead.
